MYSTIC, CT — A 14-year-old injured in a crash early Monday morning in Mystic has died, according to Town of Groton police.

Police were notified Monday night that Carson Wilson, of Groton, died as a result of the accident.

Three other teens in the car, all 17 years old, remain hospitalized.

Police received an initial call from the iPhone Crash Detection feature on one of the occupants’ cell phones at 1:21 a.m. Monday.

Police responded and found that a Toyota 4Runner left the road and crashed into the woods, trapping all four people in the SUV.

All four people needed to be extricated by emergency crews. The victims were taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

An initial investigation found that the Toyota was driving north on Fishtown Road just south of Mystic River Magnet School when it went across the southbound lane and left the road, striking a tree.

“This terrible incident will undoubtedly have a significant and lasting impact not only to Groton and Mystic, but it extends to surrounding communities through multiple connections," Town of Groton Police Chief L. J. Fusaro said in a statement. "Our department extends its heartfelt sympathies and prayers to the families impacted by this horrible tragedy and we remain committed to conducting a thorough, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into the circumstances that led up to this crash.”

A neighbor reported that he heard the sound of crash and that as a parent, it's something "that will never...leave my mind," NBC CT reported.

People came to the scene of the accident Monday to leave flowers.

Superintendent of Groton Public Schools Susan Austin released a statement following the crash. Austin said none of the victims are attending Groton Public Schools this year, but they are all former students, according to WFSB 3-TV.

"Our hearts go out to them and their families during this difficult time," the statement reads.

Counseling staff, social workers, and school psychologists will be available in the schools for those who need them.

The accident remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call the Groton Police Department at 860-441-6712.
